About

The Advertising and Promotion Commission was created on March 1, 1977 with Ordinance No. 2310 pursuant to the provisions of A.C.A 26-75-605, by the City Board to administer the Advertising and Promotion Fund. An election by the citizens of Fayetteville ratified the ordinance and collections started later that year. All collected funds were allocated to pay off bonds for the Continuing Education Center and a portion for the Arts (Walton Arts Center). Extra funds were sparse in those early years and the first advertising funds on record indicate that the commission funded a Fly FYV campaign in 1986. By 1988, the budget for advertising had increased to $145,000 and a "Best of Both Worlds" brochure was produced.

Fayetteville has long been a supporter of equal rights, and this is most prominently evidenced in the annual Northwest Arkansas Pride, which celebrates its 10th year in 2016. The event is the largest pride celebration in the state and has grown to become a multi-day festival including a parade, rally, vendor booths, parties, guest stars an interfaith fellowship gathering and more. The NWA Center for Equality makes all of this possible through the generosity of sponsors and individuals.

In December 2015, the Human Rights Campaign gave Fayetteville the highest rating in Arkansas in its annual Municipal Equality Index, an evaluation examining cities' "laws, policies and services, and rates them on the basis of their inclusivity of LGBT people who live and work there.”
